Competency and talent management for Mineral processing companies: a skills matrix for operators, lab and fitters
When a new filter press or mill arrives, a plant finds out who really knows the work. A skills matrix and task sign-offs show the gaps before a breakdown or a night shift does.

Share your requirementsWhy competency and talent management matters in mineral processing companies
Mineral plants are good at buying equipment and slower at making sure people can run it. Training is a vendor visit and a few days of watching. Later nobody can say who is fully able to run the machine alone, who can only assist and who has never touched it. The pattern repeats across operators, lab technicians and fitters.
A competency record fixes this simply. It lists key tasks per role, marks each person as learning, able with help or able alone, and dates the sign-off by a senior. Gaps become a training plan. The same record shows who is ready for a bigger role and who needs a different one.
How to set it up
1. Pick the tasks that matter
For each role, choose ten to fifteen critical tasks, such as sampling, mill start-up, filter cloth change or electrical isolation.
2. Build the matrix
A grid of people against tasks, with three levels: learning, able with help, able alone. Keep it on one sheet per section.
3. Sign off in the workplace
A senior person watches the task being done and records the date. Tasks claimed but not watched stay unmarked.
4. Plan around the gaps
Where only one person can do a task, name a second. When new equipment arrives, add its tasks to the matrix before commissioning.
5. Use it to spot talent
Look for people who are able alone on many tasks and teach others well. The competency and talent management page describes how we would help you use it.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Pick a critical task and ask how many people can do it alone, then check the record.
- Look at your newest machine and see whether a trained backup exists.
- Ask a lab technician who can cover sampling on a Sunday night.
- Check that the matrix has been updated in the last three months.

Questions owners ask
Not if it stays to critical tasks and a single sheet per section. Ten minutes a month to update is enough. The value is in seeing single points of failure.
A senior operator, fitter or supervisor who has seen the task done properly. Avoid self-sign-off. For safety-critical tasks, ask a qualified professional what evidence is needed.
It can inform grading, but start by using it for training. If you later link it to pay, explain the rules and keep the sign-off fair across shifts.
