Recruitment process consulting for IT support firms: Hiring Engineers Who Can Work Alone at a Client Site
An IT support firm needs engineers who can fix a fault and also deal with the user beside them. Hiring that tests both, and is open about shifts and travel, brings in people who stay.

Support firms often hire in a hurry, when a new contract needs a body by Monday. A certificate and a quick chat are the whole test, and the engineer is sent to a client site without being seen at work. Some turn out brilliant; others struggle with users or with travel, and leave within months. Each exit costs the firm a trained person and a client's trust.
A better process writes the role for helpdesk, field and resident work separately. It tests the real tasks: tracing a fault in a network, explaining a step to a nervous user, writing a ticket note. It is open about night calls, travel and client sites, so a candidate knows what the work involves. It keeps a record of source and stay, and builds a bench of trained candidates ahead of contracts.
How to set it up
1. Write three role profiles
Helpdesk, field and resident engineer, each with tasks, tools, hours and travel. Mark what is essential and what can be taught.
2. Run a practical trial
Give a fault to trace and a user to explain it to, observed by a senior. Score on method, calm and clarity.
3. Use several sources
Combine institutes, referrals, other support firms and a posted notice. The recruitment process consulting page shows how we would approach this.
4. State the shifts and travel
Tell candidates about night calls, standby and site postings before the offer, with the allowance table.
5. Keep a bench ahead of contracts
Hold a list of tested candidates for upcoming starts, so a new contract does not force a rushed hire.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- List hires from the last year by source and who remains.
- Ask a recent leaver what the job turned out to be that they had not expected.
- Check whether anyone saw a candidate work on a real fault before hiring.
- Read your job notice for shifts, travel and on-call details.

Questions owners ask
Both. Freshers cost less and can be trained in your ways, but need a mentor and time. Experienced engineers start faster but may carry habits and higher pay. Plan one trainee route for each experienced hire.
Role-play a call with an anxious user and see how the candidate listens, explains and stays calm. A reference from a past employer helps. Technical skill without patience is a common cause of client complaints.
Look for steady, independent people who work well without supervision, and test them on a similar fault at a mock site. Be open about isolation and give them a named lead. Check how they handle a day alone.
