Onboarding and probation for Packaged Food Makers: first days on a packing line and a cooking kettle
Line helpers in a packaged food plant change often. A planned first week and a clear probation review keep the good ones and spot the poor fits early.

A new helper is handed a station and told to follow the person next to them. Hygiene rules are explained once, quickly, and forgotten. Recipes and changeovers are not explained, so the helper does what they are told and cannot see why cleaning matters. Some stay a week and leave. Others stay and carry bad habits into the line. Probation is a date on the paper, with no review.
Good onboarding gives the first day a fixed shape: welcome, hygiene and safety, a walk through the line, and a named buddy. The first week adds the main tasks and the reasons for changeover cleaning. A review at the end of the first month looks at attendance, hygiene and speed, and the supervisor and worker both speak. Probation ends with a decision, not by default.
How to set it up
1. Write a first-day plan
Welcome, tour, hygiene and safety briefing, uniform and hand washing, buddy introduction and a simple first task. Keep it to one page with one named person responsible.
2. Teach hygiene with a reason
Show what happens when hair, a ring or a missed hand wash reaches the product. A picture of a returned lot makes the point better than a rule.
3. Name a buddy for the first two weeks
Choose someone steady and patient on the same line. Give them a short list of what to show. Tell the supervisor so the buddy is not rushed.
4. Show changeover and cleaning early
In the first week, the new helper sees a changeover and learns why each step is done. Our onboarding and probation work includes a simple checklist for this.
5. Review at one month and end of probation
The supervisor and the helper talk about attendance, hygiene, speed and any worry. Write a short note and decide to confirm, extend or end. Tell the person the outcome.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- How many helpers left in the first month in the last quarter
- Whether every new joiner has a named buddy
- What the first-day plan includes today
- Whether probation ended with a recorded decision

Questions owners ask
Set it according to the role and your own practice. What matters is that it has a review point and a decision, not a default pass at the end.
A steady, patient helper from the same line, given a short list and time to teach. Avoid choosing the fastest person if they are impatient.
Correct it kindly at once, explain why and note it. Repeated lapses become a matter for the supervisor and a probation discussion.
