Performance management for Sensor Manufacturers: rewarding accuracy over speed
Sensor quality depends on steady hands and exact records. Performance management that rewards accuracy and clean working, not just output, keeps the right habits.

Without clear measures, ratings favour speed. An operator who finishes more units is rated higher than one who catches a seal fault. Calibration technicians who spend time getting a reading right look slow. Records are completed late, and nobody checks them until a customer asks. Application engineers are rated by sales numbers that they do not control.
A better approach picks a few measures per role that match the work: units passing first time, calibration repeat rate, records complete and correct, cleanliness checks and customer follow-up. Supervisors talk to each person quarterly with real records. Feedback is specific, support comes before warnings and good care is named.
How to set it up
1. Choose three measures per role
For assembly: first pass and handling. For calibration: repeat rate and record accuracy. For application engineers: response, quality of advice and follow-up.
2. Take figures from existing records
Use test logs, calibration sheets and customer logs that you already keep. If a measure needs new paperwork, drop it.
3. Hold quarterly talks
Supervisors sit with each person for ten minutes and review the facts. Write one agreement on what will change.
4. Reward accuracy and teaching
Name careful work and mentoring in reviews and link them to skill steps. Our performance management service helps build the form.
5. Support before penalty
If someone is below standard, agree training and a review date. Keep any formal steps separate and fair.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Read the last ten appraisals and count those that cite a specific unit or record.
- Compare the ratings of your fastest operator with their seal or leak failures.
- Check how many calibration records were corrected after the event.
- Ask an application engineer what they are measured on and who sets it.

Questions owners ask
Make records part of each step, check them at the end of each shift and show people the cost of an error. Rate record accuracy in reviews so that it is seen as part of the job.
Use it carefully. Speed targets can push technicians to rush. Prefer accuracy and repeat rate as the main measures, and track time only to plan work.
Judge the care taken, communication with the customer and handover to production, not just the speed. Custom work disturbs routine, so recognise people who protect quality while doing it.
