Employee onboarding process for Arts and Science Colleges: a proper start for new teachers and clerks
New teachers and clerks often start with a timetable and a key. A planned first week, including guest lecturers, helps them settle and teach well from the start.

Share your requirementsWhy employee onboarding process matters in arts and science colleges
A new assistant professor joins in June, receives a timetable, meets the head of department and begins teaching. Nobody explains attendance rules, examination duties, the grievance route or how pay works. A guest lecturer arrives for two classes a week and is never introduced to anyone. A new clerk learns by watching and makes avoidable mistakes in the first month.
Onboarding gives each group what it needs: a welcome, a plan for the first weeks, a buddy and a clear explanation of how the college works. It covers records and terms and checks in at the end of the first month. It takes little time and reduces early confusion and early exits.
How to set it up
1. Prepare before the day
Appointment letter, timetable, access and a named buddy, sent or arranged ahead of joining.
2. Run a short induction
The principal or a senior teacher explains the college, rules, calendar, examination duties and who to ask.
3. Introduce the department
Meet colleagues, see labs and library, and learn the routines of the department. See employee onboarding process.
4. Set tasks for the first month
A few clear goals, such as completing a syllabus plan or learning the records system, with a review at the end.
5. Include guests and clerks
A shorter version for guest lecturers and a task-based one for office staff, each with a contact person.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Ask the last three joiners what they wish they had known on day one.
- Check whether guest lecturers receive any induction.
- Look for a buddy system for new staff.
- Count joiners who left within six months.

Questions owners ask
A morning for the general session and a few short meetings across the first week is usually enough. The first-month review matters more than the length of the initial session.
A colleague in the same or a nearby department who is approachable, knows the routines and has time. Brief the buddy on what to cover, and thank them for the effort.
Timetable, syllabus, assessment duties, payment day, whom to call and the college's rules on conduct and attendance. A one-page note and a short meeting are enough.
